  • Natural gas is less expensive than propane.
  • You no longer have to lug heavy propane tanks back and forth for filling.

Disadvantages of Natural Gas Grilling

  • The location of your grill is fixed, so you won’t be able to move it.
  • Professional installation is required, and the initial cost of the gas plumbing can be expensive.
  • Natural gas grills are more expensive than propane grills.

Pro Tip:

Some areas require a permit to install a gas BBQ line (we can help you with this!).  Also, if you live in a community that has a homeowners’ association, certain types of grills may be subject to restrictions. Finally, gas grills and propane grills are not the same thing, so be sure to shop for the right type of bbq for your gas line install.

While each grill manufacturer has their own guidelines, the general consensus is that your grill should be an absolute minimum of 3 feet away from any house walls. Additionally, your grill should also be placed at least 10 feet away from any objects that are easily flammable or could catch fire from an ignition.

Observing only fuel cost and efficiency, natural gas is cheaper than liquid propane. But if your home doesn’t have a natural gas tank or would require commissioning a professional to add an extension to your grill, it’s not a simple decision. Plus, natural gas grills usually demand a slightly higher price tag.

Barbecue grills can be converted to natural gas through conversion kits, although some manufactures no longer permit gas conversions. If possible, it’s best to purchase a natural gas grill.

It is important to never change the gas source between natural gas and propane without also changing the orifices, regulators and valves. If propane is supplied through an orifice manufactured for natural gas, too much propane will be released and a large flame will result. This could result in serious injury and damage to the grill.
